Compositions

My compositions are currently under "implied copyright" and will soon be registered under ASCAP.  In the meantime, they may be recorded ("covered") at will as long as proper credit is given.  The following is a list of my compositions in reverse chronological order, with brief descriptions and links to recordings (when available).

 Untitled Bulerias
 Work in Progress

 Bebop Aflamencada
 July-October 2010
N/AThis piece was, as the title indicates, inspired by both bebop and flamenco.  In particular, I take the former form's fast tempos and melodies and combine them with the latter's guitar techniques.
Jazzpania July 2010http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifOl-SB8FswA piece in the tangos flamenco form (although some may argue it is also reminiscent of 'colombianas') with, as they title indicates, jazz influences.
 The Lonely Tulip
 May 2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a41hC3cLL6s
A jazz piece with mixed rhythms, textures, and untraditional harmonies.
 Forgotten Murder
 April 2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaEyxvkg9BkThe centerpiece of my noir suite, this will be a guitar/voice duet.  The video, however, is a solo guitar arrangement, which doesn't differ too much from the accompaniment in duo format.
 Ghost March 2010
N/A
The fourth part of my noir jazz suite, this will be a guitar/voice duet with lyrics by Nataliya Ishkova.
 Abandoned City
 March 2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_rNsd9jyC0
A waltz, this is the 7th and last part of my upcoming noir jazz suite.
 The Arrival, Gertrude, The Pursuit
 January-February 2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teVmuzMI54Q
These are the first three parts of my upcoming noir jazz suite, "Forgotten Murder in an Abandoned City", which will follow a narrative inspired by film noir.  These pieces will be performed in quintet format (guitar, sax, flute, bass, drums).
 For A Harpist
 December 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_CV_Bg6HmIComposed for and dedicated to a friend of mine, no part of this piece was thought out in advance... it was a musical "stream of consciousness".
 Buleria de la Muerte
 December 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmtp4pNbiG0Written for a performance as part of the 3rd Annual Flamenco Guitarathon, this is an amalgamation of certain compositional aspects of tango -- specifically, those pioneered by Astor Piazzolla -- and flamenco.
 What Key Is This?
 December 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBr__AOwJRAThe result of a jam session with my brother, during which we started discussing tonics, chord resolutions, and other essential -- or not -- aspects of music.
 Sunday Morning
 August 2009, March 2010
N/A
Conceptualized sometime during summer 2009 and finished the following year, this will be the fourth piece in my noir suite.  It is for a guitar, flute, bass, and drums quartet.
 Silhouette June 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_ebkqVev8kInspired by a new-found love for "noir jazz" (thanks in part to Paul Motian's "Tribute" and Bohren & der Club of Gore's "Sunset Mission), this two-guitar composition was originally meant for a guitar, sax, bass, and drums quartet.
 St. Augustine
 June 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGSKzNWzc4w
Composed during a vacation in St. Augustine, FL, this is a jazz-waltz inspired by the beautiful city and its rich history.
 Bulerias in D
 June 2009
Recorded on "Silhouette"
Having experimented briefly with free-form flamenco palos, I tried my hand at more rhythmic flamenco.  This piece doesn't really work as a solo composition, but is pretty effective with a bass.
 Silent Sounds - For Miles
 May 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGeZ89bsZwIMay 2009 was a great month for me, musically -- as well as discovering Estrella Morente, I also start listening to jazz great Miles Davis.  This tune was inspired by his seminal jazz fusion record, "In a Silent Way".
 Para Estrella
 May 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N33BQO-kjaw
Upon discovering Estrella Morente, flamenco's most promising young singer, I was inspired to write a tune dedicated to her.  The opening melody in B-flat minor is based on a song from her second album, while the rest is original.
 Rondena/Bulerias April 2009
Recorded on "Silhouette"
A second attempt at free-form flamenco composition, but this time with a rhythmic closer (which was added during the recording of Silhouette some months later).
 Rumba de Janeiro
 March 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3pji-ClpBA
A "cante chico" composition that happened to enter my working repertoire and has since become one of my favorite tunes to play with my brother Adrian (who plays flute on the Silhouette recording).
Tarantas 2008http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAMvSAqZMuQMy first attempt at writing a flamenco tune in one of the "free-form" palos.
Longing 2008Recorded on "Watercolors of the World"The first tune I ever wrote, "Longing" is a ballad with a Russian sensibility.

Larger Works

Forgotten Murder in an Abandoned City
A "noir jazz suite" in 7 parts (The Arrival, Gertrude, The Pursuit, Ghost, Sunday Morning, Forgotten Murder, Abandoned City) in various configurations, such as quintet (sax, guitar, flute, bass, drums), quartet (same minus sax), and vocal-guitar duos.  This will be the centerpiece of my upcoming album, "Jazz Noir", which will also feature two solo guitar pieces, For a Harpist and The Lonely Tulip, as the opener and closer, respectively.
